Frank Lampard scored a late equalizer against his former club Chelsea to earn 10-man Manchester City a 1-1 draw on Sunday in England’s Premier League and end visiting Chelsea’s winning start to the season.
Lampard, a midfielder released by Chelsea this summer after he scored a club-record 211 goals in 13 years at Stamford Bridge, refused to celebrate after his side-footed shot deflected in off John Terry in the 85th minute.
“I’m a bit lost for words — I didn’t expect to score like that,” Lampard said. “I’m a bit stuck in the middle.”
He was applauded before and after the game by Chelsea’s traveling fans.
Manchester United, which has won just one league game so far under the new manager Louis van Gaal, led, 3-1, before newly promoted Leicester City scored four times in 20 minutes to secure a stunning 5-3 win.
Robin van Persie, Ángel Di Maria and Ander Herrera all scored to illustrate visiting United’s attacking verve, but van Gaal has deep concerns over the balance of his team.
“We have too many players who want to seek for the goal,” he said.
West Bromwich Albion beat the host Tottenham Spurs, 1-0, to climb off the bottom of the standings, and Crystal Palace also grabbed a first win of the season, defeating Everton, 3-2.
BARCELONA CRUISES Lionel Messi shrugged off a missed penalty and another injury to Neymar by scoring one goal and setting up two more to lead Barcelona to a 5-0 rout at 10-man Levante as it stayed atop the Spanish league.
Messi has played a direct part in nine of Barcelona’s 12 goals in its five wins across all competitions, scoring three and assisting on six more.
Barcelona’s fourth win in four rounds left it 2 points ahead of undefeated Sevilla, which beat host Córdoba, 3-1.
Elsewhere, host Villarreal roared back from a two-goal deficit to rout Rayo Vallecano, 4-2, while Almería hung on for a wild 2-1 win at Real Sociedad to claim its first victory of the season after having both a player and its coach sent off.
ROMA CATCHES JUVENTUS Alessandro Florenzi set up one goal and then scored another as host Roma pulled level with Juventus atop the Italian league with a 2-0 win over Cagliari.
After beating Sassuolo by 7-0 last weekend, Inter Milan was held to a 1-1 draw at Palermo. Udinese edged visiting Napoli, 1-0, with a goal from Danilo midway through the second half. Also, Fiorentina won, 1-0, at Atalanta, while Parma beat Chievo Verona, 3-2.
WOLFSBURG NOTCHES FIRST WIN Ricardo Rodriguez scored two goals and set up another as host Wolfsburg defeated 10-man Bayer Leverkusen, 4-1, in the Bundesliga for its first win.
Cologne and visiting Borussia Mönchengladbach played out a 0-0 draw.
P.S.G. SLIPS Paris St.-Germain, the French league’s defending champion, extended its poor start with a 1-1 draw at home with Lyon. It was P.S.G.’s fourth draw in six matches, dropping it to 3 points behind Marseille, the league leader.
Midfielder Fabien Lemoine scored a late winner as Saint-Étienne won, 1-0, at Lens. Earlier, Lille failed to break Montpellier’s defense in a 0-0 draw. And Monaco climbed away from the relegation zone after a scrappy 1-0 home win against Guingamp.
